Emperor, Empress host tea party for visiting VIPs

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko hosted a tea party for International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Juan Antonio Samaranch and other visiting dignitaries Friday, the eve of the opening day of the Nagano Winter Games.

Among the 220 VIPs who attended the party were Princess Anne of Britain and Prince Albert of Monaco, both IOC members.

The imperial couple, who arrived from Tokyo by train earlier in the day, are in Nagano for the opening ceremony of the 16-day sports festival Saturday.
