In April 1989, Shinmai became Japan's first newspaper to equip each reporter with his/her own word processor for use in writing stories and submitting them to the newspaper's computer system. Shinmai's New COSMOS newspaper production system, in use since late 1991, is an advanced system that allows a single editor using a "Shinmai Workstation" to direct the editing of each newspaper page. Shinmai has also developed its own software incorporating artificial intelligence features. The New COSMOS system completely computerized every aspect of newspaper production, from input and layout to image processing (including photographs) and output - even advertisements. This has reduced production time and has allowed for earlier submission of stories by the writers. The newspaper is printed at two locations: the Nagano Printing Center and the Shiojiri Printing Center, resulting in a system that covers the entire broad Prefecture. The Nagano Printing Center, which was completed in 2001, responds to the demands for color news photographs and advertisements by efficiently employing two sets of 40-page full color ultra high-speed presses that run based on a shaft-less method, and new technology such as CTP (computer-to-plate, i.e., plate-making directly from the computer).
